Undergraduate Education Grants

There are grants available for undergraduate students. These grants can be used to pay for the student's cost of attending school. Grants are not required to be repaid by the recipients. However, grant programs might stipulate that the grantee must meet and maintain certain eligibility requirements during the award period.
  1. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

    • The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is given to students who show exceptional financial need to pay for school. Students who receive Pell grants, which is a needs-based financial award given to students attending a postsecondary school and have the lowest expected family contribution (EFC), will receive priority consideration.

This is determined by the information submitted on the student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FSEOG amounts range from $100 to $4,000, which is determined by the student's financial need, the time of application and the school's funding and financial aid policies.

    The National SMART Grant

    • The Department of Education sponsors the National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant). This grant is eligible for students who are considered third and fourth year undergraduates. Students can receive up to $4,000 per year during their third and fourth years.

To be eligible for the SMART grant, students must be majoring in a specific field such as engineering, science, math, computer science or learning a critical foreign language.

Students must also maintain a 3.0 grade-point average in their course work and have received federal Pell grant funds. The grant amount will be reduced if combined with the Pell grant will surpass the cost of attendance of the student's school.

    Academic Competitiveness Grant

    • Undergraduate students can also apply for the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) program. This grant program started during the 2006-2007 school year. First-year students can get up to $750 per year, and second-year students can receive $1,300.

To become eligible, first-year student must not have previously attend an ACG-eligible program. Second-year students must have maintained a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) during their first year. Both first- and second-year students must be enrolled in their degree program at least half of the time and are Pell grant recipients.

ACG amounts will be reduced if the combined grant total of this award and the Pell grant will exceed the student's cost of attendance.
