Mental Health Education Grants

Private and federal organizations like the United States Department of Education and the United States Department of Health and Human Services fund and administer grants that help to provide education for medical professionals, laypersons and families of people dealing with mental health challenges. Colleges, universities, hospitals and community agencies are some of the organizations that can apply for the grants.
  1. Integration of Schools and Mental Health Systems

    • The purpose of the Integration of Schools and Mental Health Systems Grant is to increase access to mental health care for Indian tribal educators and members through initiatives created by local school and mental health organizations. Funded projects must develop or strengthen prevention, treatment and diagnosis efforts of training and medical facilities, including training school staff and mental health professionals. State Education Agencies (SEAs), Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and other area training organizations are eligible to apply for the grant that started in 2005. The 2010 grant expects to distribute awards to 15 to 18 different organizations. Individual grant awards range in amount from $150,900 to $400,000. The grand total of the grant is expected to be $5.9 million.

    Suicide Prevention Grant

    • The Suicide Prevention Grant is designed to provide training, suicide prevention, intervention initiatives, and technological and staff support resources to individual and organizational programs. Programs are created in partnership with the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) and the National Action Alliance. Initiatives that offer support to military service people returned from battle zones and their family members who are experiencing stress and depression are given priority over other grant applicants. Native American tribal organizations, faith-based organizations, and state and local government agencies are eligible to apply for the grant. The grant last for five years. One grant is expected to be awarded in the amount of $4.4 million.

    Mental Health Transformation Grant

    • Local, state, federal and Native American tribal organizations are eligible to apply for the Mental Health Transformation Grant. Eligible organizations must provide prevention, intervention, and treatment services and support to substance abusers and people dealing with mental health challenges. Programs must develop methods to screen people who are at risk of developing mental illness before the disease manifests. Educational training that prepares people dealing with mental illness to secure quality employment must be provided by grant recipients. Programs should be designed with a holistic approach. A total of 22 grants are expected to be awarded at $750,000 a year, for a grand total of $16.5 million.
