LVN Grants

Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN), also referred to as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), are entry-level medical professionals who care for patients under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses. To become an LVN, students must complete an Associate's Degree or earn a certificate from an accredited program. Tuition at two-year community colleges averages from $4,600 for in-state students to $21,600 for non-residents. Prospective LVN's can help defray some of this cost by applying for grants, and current LVN's can receive grants for continuing education.
  1. U.S. Department of Education

    • Nursing students enrolled in accredited programs can apply for two grants offered by the U.S. government. Pell Grants provide between $400 and $4,050 while Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants award yearly amounts ranging from $100 to $4,000. The amount awarded depends upon a student's financial need and how much his or her family can contribute. Both grants require students to enroll on a minimum half-time basis. To apply, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

    Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Foundation

    • The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) offers three grants that current and future LPN's can use to continue education and training. This organization's Certification Grant gives two awards for recipients to take the certification exam to become Certified Medical Surgical Nurses. Convention Grants provide funds for LVNs to travel to the AMSN annual convention, where recipients can receive training in workshops and seminars. Those interested in participating in AMSN's "Nursing in Washington Internship" can apply for a NIWI grant that covers the costs of travel and lodging in Washington D.C. At this conference, nurses will learn how to influence nursing-related policy. All applicants must have a current membership in the AMSN.

    College Foundation of North Carolina

    • In order to combat a nursing shortage in North Carolina, this state's College Foundation offers a Nurse Education Scholarship-Loan Program (NESLP) to help pay for nursing training. Prospective LVN's can apply for up to $3,000 in funds to cover the cost of tuition at an accredited program. This foundation determines awards based on financial need, tuition costs and academic merit. Award recipients must sign a promissory note that binds them contractually to work in North Carolina for at least six months of full-time consecutive employment. If the grant winner fails to complete this term of service, he or she must repay the award.
