Single Parent Financial Aid Grants

Grants are available to help single parents go to school. These grants can be used to pay for costs such as books, tuition and rent. Schools can also apply for grants to help with child care services. Single parents who are applying for grants must show financial need to qualify. These grants do not have to be repaid, and award amounts are formula based.
  1. Child Care Access Means Parents in School

    • Institutions of higher education can help single parents achieve their educational goals by assisting them with day care services. The U.S. Department of Education sponsors a child care grant that pays for campus-based child care services for low-income students. It allows for child care services to be made available before and after the parents attend classes. Colleges and universities are eligible if their student bodies have received more than $350,000 in Federal Pell Grants the previous year. Grants cannot be used for construction unless it is necessary for child care facilities to meet state and local requirements.

    Federal Pell Grant Program

    • The Federal Pell Grant program provides financial aid to students who need help paying for college. This program provides undergraduate students and students in post-baccalaureate programs for teaching certification and licensure with grants that are accepted at 5,400 post-secondary institutions, as of 2010. Grant amounts are based on the students' Expected Family Contribution (EFC), tuition costs, school status (full-time or part-time) and if they are attending school for the entire year. Students cannot receive Federal Pell Grants from more than one school at a time.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

    • Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is provided to students who show exceptional need for financial help to pay for school. As of 2010, FSEOG grant amounts range from $100 to $4,000 per year based on when the application was received and student's financial need. Students who have received Federal Pell Grants with low EFC amounts will receive stronger consideration for this grant.
