College Grants for Single Fathers

According to CNN Money, the U.S. Census Bureau revealed the number of households headed by single fathers more than doubled to 2.5 million between 1990 and 2006. The federal and state governments have a variety of scholarship, grant and loan programs available for single fathers who are entertaining the notion of pursuing higher education opportunities.
  1. Needs-Based Qualifications

    • Single fathers who feel they may qualify for economically needs-based financial aid assistance should contact the financial aid office at the 2-year or 4-year educational institution they intend to apply to. The lower the father's income level, the more a greater demonstrated need for college financial aid assistance may be. An application process is necessary for the single father seeking to qualify for assistance based on need.

    Availability

    • There is more than $170 billion in federal financial aid available to help pay for college tuition for single fathers to qualify for. Students interested in qualifying for college grants must file a federal financial aid application, known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is required by the U.S. Department of Education in order to determine the amount the student himself may be able to contribute toward his college education cost.

    GI Bill Benefits

    • If a single father serves or has served in the military, then he may be eligible for up to $49,000 in GI Bill education benefits. GI Bill benefits apply to any Department of Veterans Affairs education benefit earned by members of Active Duty, Selected Reserve and National Guard Armed Forces. This benefit will assist eligible single fathers in covering the educational costs related to obtaining a college education or other related training.

    Avoid Scams

    • Legitimate government-backed scholarship, grant or loan programs do not charge a fee. Scam operations entice unsuspecting potential students with opportunities to win a large scholarship award with a small fee or require a fee for a loan or grant. Legitimate educational institutions do not charge fees up front nor do they provide funds for educational opportunities that are not affiliated with a banking or loan institution. So student applicants be cautious when searching for college grant opportunities.
