As a military spouse, you may wonder if any special benefits or government programs exist to help offset the costs of rising tuition rates for yourself or your children. Several different grant opportunities are available to military dependents, and with a little paperwork and a lot of patience, you can be on your way to receiving the financial assistance you need to help further your educational goals.
  1. MYCAA Career Advancement Grant

    • Career Advancement

      Launched in 2009, the My Career Advancement Account or MYCAA government-sponsored grant provides spouses of active duty military with the opportunity to further their education or to become certified in an approved trade. The program provides up to $6,000 that can be used towards the cost of tuition in any number of approved programs or fields of study.

      To get started with the program, log onto MilitaryOneSource.com and set up an account through the MYCAA accounts page. Once eligibility has been verified, the program will give you simple step-by-step instructions on how to have the funds appropriated to the school of your choice.

    General Henry H. Arnold Grant

    • Air Force Grants

      Started in 1988, the Gen. Henry H. Arnold Grant provides $2,000 towards educational expenses for the spouses or dependants of Air Force personnel whether on active duty status or retired. Persons utilizing the grant program must be attending college full time.

    Post 9/11 GI Bill

    • The Post 9/11 GI Bill began Aug. 1, 2009. The bill provides military personnel with the opportunity to transfer all of their remaining benefits directly to their spouse. The grant covers up to 100 percent of the cost of tuition at the university of your choice, provided that the active duty military spouse has been serving for at least six years and will remain in active duty for the subsequent four years after the transfer of benefits has been approved.
