Minnesota Disability Grants

Disabled persons and their advocates are often eligible for state and federal grant funding. In Minnesota, several state agencies provide grant opportunities that benefit the disabled community. Funds can be used to improve access to transit, health care, education and other state services. The following programs offer funding to benefit Minnesota’s disabled community.
  1. Elderly and Persons with Disabilities Program

    • Public transportation can be difficult to access for persons with disabilities.

The Elderly and Persons with Disabilities Program assist elderly persons and the disabled with no or limited access to existing transportation services. The grant program provides 80 percent of wheelchair-accessible vehicle costs and recipients contribute 20 percent from non-federal funds.

The following Minnesota entities are eligible to receive grant funds: state/local governments, private nonprofit organizations, public transportation operators and tribal governments.

Grant documents and applications can be downloaded on the Minnesota State Department of Transportation website. Hard copy and electronic copies of the application must be submitted.

    Family Support Grants

    • FSG grants help families with disabled children stay together.

The Minnesota Department of Human Service sponsors Family Support Grants (FSG) to assist families with children with certified disabilities. FSG funds are intended to prevent out-of-home placement of disabled children and keep families together.

Families comprising children (age 21 and younger) with a certified disability living with biological or adoptive parents are eligible for FSG funds. Even families with disabled children in a licensed residential facility are eligible for FSG funds if they intend to bring the child home.

The FSG program is administered on the county level. Applications can be found at local Minnesota county social service agencies. Grant funds can be used to purchase items that directly impact a child’s disability in the home, e.g., computers, medical services, medicine and special clothing. Awards can be one-time or ongoing and are capped at $3,060 per year for each eligible child.

    • Polling places are sometimes inaccessible for disabled voters. EAID grants help bridge the gap between voters and outdated polling facilities.

The Election Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities (EAID) Grant is administered by the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State. The grants are intended to make polling places more accessible to disabled voters and are available in accordance with the federal Help American Vote Act of 2002.

Entities eligible for the EAID grant are cities, townships and counties. Applications are available on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website. Applications must include demographic information about the locality and a description of proposed improvements.
