The Houston County Farm Bureau offers a $1,000 scholarship each year to a Houston County high school student whose parents are currently members of the Houston County Farm Bureau. To apply for the scholarship you must submit an application by mid-April, and include a short biographical essay describing yourself and your involvement in any FFA or 4-H activities, leadership roles and any other school or community activities. You are also required to include a section on your future plans for both college and after. As part of the application be sure to include a copy of your transcripts and your SAT and ACT scores. The Farm Bureau scholarship is designed to help cover the cost of books, tools or equipment required for your first year of school. The scholarship is open to any student accepted into an accredited college, university or trade school. All recipients of the scholarship must be enrolled full-time and provide the Farm Bureau committee a grade report each semester. Contact the Houston County Farm Bureau for how to apply.
Awarded to 10 graduating high school seniors each year, the Houston County Electric Cooperative offers a $1,000 scholarship to those whose parents or legal guardians receive electric services from the cooperative. The scholarship is awarded in honor of Dorthy H. Goodrum, a cooperative board member from 1988 to 2004. To apply for the scholarship you must submit an application to the scholarship committee, with two letters of recommendation and an official copy of your transcripts. The committee also asks that you include a short description of your future plans. Applications must be received by April, and can be found on the Houston County Electric Cooperative's website. If awarded the scholarship, a student must use it to attend an accredited Texas institute of higher learning and supply the committee with an update of experiences and progress at the end of the semester.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo offers 70 four-year, $15,000 scholarships to students in 60 Texas counties, including Houston County. To be eligible you must represent your county in the Livestock Show's Area Go Texas program. The scholarship is open to seniors attending an accredited public Texas high school and ranked in the upper third of their class. Also, you must demonstrate a minimum SAT score of 1350 or an ACT score of 19. If you receive the scholarship you must use it to attend a Texas university or college. All applications are due in January and are available on the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo website. You will be required to fill out the free government FAFSA form in order to apply for the scholarship as well.
