How to Update FAFSA Information

Filling out a FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, can help you get financial aid money for college. When you file a FAFSA, however, you may not have all the financial information you need, particularly if you have not filed your income taxes yet. If you entered inaccurate or estimated information on your FAFSA, you will have to update it with the correct information. It is easy to do this with FAFSA's official website.

Instructions

  1. Update FAFSA Information Online

    • 1

Visit the official FAFSA website. Click the "Start Here" button under "Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)."

    • 2

Click "Make FAFSA Corrections," then enter your PIN. If you don't remember your PIN, click "Request A Duplicate PIN" on the PIN home page to get a reminder.

    • 3

Add or correct the necessary information on your FAFSA, then submit the completed FAFSA.

    Update FAFSA Information by Mail

    • 4

Print out your Student Aid Report (SAR), if you did not receive one in the mail or cannot find the copy you received. If you have a valid email address on file, you should have received instructions on how to access your SAR. If not, call 800-4-FED-AID for instructions.

    • 5

Correct or add the necessary information on your SAR. Sign it to verify that your information is correct.

    • 6

Mail the corrected SAR to the address provided on the SAR for sending updated FAFSA information.
