How to Find Your FAFSA Information

The United States realizes that a college education is important and wants to ensure that everyone gets an equal chance. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid sends each student's financial information to the colleges of their choice, allowing each college to determine aid eligibility. This is a government-funded program that ensures that all students receive all of the federal aid they are eligible for. Once you have filled out and filed your FAFSA, you must be able to access your information to ensure proper submission, double check where your information was sent, or make changes to the schools listed if necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

File for a personal identification number, PIN, when you submit your FAFSA. The PIN number is a four-digit number granting you access to your information. You can use either the PIN website at pin.ed.gov or the FAFSA site at fafsa.ed.gov. Choose whether you would like to see your PIN immediately, receive it via email or receive it in the mail. If you use the FAFSA site, you will automatically receive your pin via email if you enter your email or via postal mail if you do not.

    • 2

Log into your FAFSA account at fafsa.ed.gov to check on the status of your application. If you have used your PIN number to sign the form electronically, you should check your account in three to five days to ensure it was received. If you printed, signed and mailed the signature page, check in two to three weeks to ensure proper submission.

    • 3

Check your Student Aid Report, SAR. This report is sent to your home after your application has been processed. The SAR contains information about your application, including the colleges that you requested to receive your information.

    • 4

Use the Data Release Number, DRN, located in the lower left corner of your SAR to make changes to your FAFSA information. This includes adding new colleges to receive your information.
