How to Find a FAFSA Number

Your FAFSA number, or "Data Release Number," is the four-digit number assigned to your student aid application by Federal Student Aid. The number can be used by a customer service representative to access your application so that changes to such things as your mailing address, your email address, your phone number, your school code and your housing plan can be made. You can find your DRN by looking on your paperwork or contacting a FAFSA customer service representative.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your paper Student Aid Report (SAR). The DRN will be located on the upper right corner of the first page.

    • 2

Log in to your FAFSA online account by going to the FAFSA website and clicking on "Start Here." To log in you will need a Federal Student Aid PIN. Click on the SAR icon and look to the upper right corner of the report to see your DSN.

    • 3

Find the confirmation email that was sent to you after you submitted your Federal Student Aid application. The DSN was given to you in this email.

    • 4

Contact a FAFSA customer service representative by phone at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) to request the DSN if you can't find it. The customer service representative will ask you certain security questions, such as your birthday and phone number before she releases the DRN to you.
