A lender number is the six-digit identification number for Stafford or PLUS student loan lenders. The code is assigned by the U.S. Department of Education to institutions in federal loan programs. If you are applying for a student loan, you'll need the lender's lender code. If you already have a lender code on your paperwork and want to know the name of the lender, you can use a free reverse-lookup directory to find the lender's name and address.
