How to Submit an FAFSA

The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Filling out this form is essential for most college students because the FAFSA indicates the amount of loans, grants and/or scholarship money you qualify for. The FAFSA requires the tax and household information of you and your parent(s) if you are a dependent. The fastest way to complete it is to fill it out online and electronically sign it with a PIN. Filling out the FAFSA can be tedious so you will want to have all of your information together before you begin filling it out.

Visit the FAFSA home page (see References). From the home page, click the "PIN Site" tab. You will need a PIN to sign your FAFSA electronically instead of printing it out and mailing it. If you are a dependent, your parent will need a PIN as well.

    • 2

Fill out Section 4 and 5 by entering in your parent(s) personal information and tax information if you are a dependent student. It is easiest to have your parent(s) fill this section out with you. If you are not a dependent, indicate this in these sections.

    • 9

    • 10

Complete Section 7 by reviewing and confirming the information you entered. You will receive a confirmation email that your FAFSA has been successfully submitted.
