Visit the FAFSA home page (see References). From the home page, click the "PIN Site" tab. You will need a PIN to sign your FAFSA electronically instead of printing it out and mailing it. If you are a dependent, your parent will need a PIN as well.
Click "Apply Now" to apply for your PIN. You will need to fill out your name, social security number, birthday and address. Submit you PIN application. This will take at most 4 days to be verified and processed. Wait until your PIN is activated. You will be notified by email.
Visit the FAFSA home page again. Select the "School Code Search" link. You will need the code of the college you attend so that when you submit your FAFSA a copy will be sent to the school. If the school does not receive your FAFSA, you will either face a late fee or lose your financial aid.
Enter in the state and city of your school and select "Search." Sometimes school names are abbreviated so your school name may be listed this way. Write down the federal code for your school. Set it aside.
Visit the FAFSA home page again. Click "Start Here" to begin the application process. The FAFSA application includes 7 steps. The first step is to fill out your demographics. Here you will enter your personal information. When completed, click "Next."
Fill out Section 2 by choosing the school you want your FAFSA to be sent to. You will need to use the school code you acquired in Steps 3 and 4.
Fill out Section 3 by entering your household information. Most of this information should come from your tax forms. This information generally asks about your marital status, children and dependents and about any benefits already received.
Fill out Section 4 and 5 by entering in your parent(s) personal information and tax information if you are a dependent student. It is easiest to have your parent(s) fill this section out with you. If you are not a dependent, indicate this in these sections.
Fill out Section 6 by using the PIN that you applied for. You will submit your FAFSA in this section.
Complete Section 7 by reviewing and confirming the information you entered. You will receive a confirmation email that your FAFSA has been successfully submitted.
