How to Get FAFSA School Information

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an important step in funding your college education. Students may apply electronically or by filling out the paper application. When applying for aid, it is important to include each school you are applying to so that the school will receive the information necessary to offer all of the aid and loans for which you may be eligible. According to the Federal Student Aid website, the Department of Education assigns a federal school code to each school that participates in federal aid programs.

      Get the Free Application for Federal Student aid by going to the FAFSA website .Here you may choose to fill out the application directly online or request a paper copy be sent to you. You may create an account which will lead you through the online application process.

      Complete questions leading up to the section requiring school information, which include questions one through 100. There is an online tutorial for each section for questions you may have, such as providing income tax and other personal information required on the application.

      When you reach question number 101, enter the federal school code for each school to which you are applying. The federal school code begins with a zero, G, B or E and is followed by five digits. The list of school codes can be found at on the website. A search feature allows you to enter the title of the school to find the corresponding code. You may also find the federal school code by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). If the college you are applying to does not have a code, you may enter the name of the college and address in the space allotted.
