Alternatives to Student Loans in Oregon

Going to school can be expensive if you don't have the money needed for your school expenses. Student loans are an option for students needing financial assistance. Depending on the loan, the student may need a parent or adult to co-sign for the loan. Often these loans can be repaid after the student graduates. Alternatives to student loans in Oregon include scholarships, work-study programs, grants, and the Pathway program.
  1. PathwayOregon

    • PathwayOregon is a program that provides financial assistance to lower income Oregon students. It pays for tuition and fees for qualifying students attending the University of Oregon. To apply for this award, students must apply to the University of Oregon, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be an Oregon resident. The student can apply for housing assistance with this award if she has a 3.8 high school GPA, has completed the online housing application, and qualifies for the maximum Pell grant award.

    Scholarships

    • The Oregon State Electronic application page has over 300 scholarship opportunities available to student seeking scholarships to college (see Resources). Scholarships are available for students with different qualifications. If you excel in academics, you may consider the following scholarships: Sehar Saleha Ahmad and Abrahim Ekramullah Zafar Foundation, Robert C. Byrd Federal Honors Program, or the W. C. and Pearl Campbell Scholarship. These scholarships require at least a 3.80 GPA. Students needing financial aid may considering applying for scholarships that are based on financial need: Clark H. Carnes and Joe Ann Carnes Memorial, William Brent Anderson Memorial, and Chandler Scholars Program.

    Work Study

    • College students can use work study funds to assist with their college expenses. To receive the work study award, you must be a full-time student and eligible for financial aid. When you are in a work study program, you are limited to working 20 hours a week or less while you attend classes. When you complete the FAFSA application for work study, you must apply for financial aid assistance. If you are approved for financial assistance, work study may be one of the aid options given to you. Review your school's deadline to verify when the work study assignments begin.

    Pell Grant

    • When you apply for financial aid assistance using the FAFSA application, you can apply for the Federal Pell Grant, an educational grant provided by the U.S. Department of Education. Qualifying students can receive up to $5,350 per academic year. The Pell Grant award amount was increased by $619 by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
