How to Get Federal Grant Money for College Tuition

Going to college can secure your future and give you more options, but it can also be expensive. There are some ways for you to secure federal grant money for a tuition and alleviate the expense. The government has several sites set up at which you can apply for student loans as well as federal grant money.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Student Aid site for the government. Studentaid.gov is the government's site for all things loan- and grant-related when it comes to going to school.

    • 2

Fill out a FAFSA on the government's student aid site. The FAFSA, which is the form used by all accredited universities as well as all government loan and grant programs, will determine whether you are eligible for financial aid, including grants.

    • 3

Sign up for an electronic PIN number on the FAFSA website, and sign your FAFSA. Submit the FAFSA online.

    • 4

Wait the required time, usually 7 to 10 days, to see if you qualify for government aid. The FAFSA process will immediately let you know if you are eligible for any government grants or loans to pay for school.

    • 5

Accept or refuse any grants that are offered by the FAFSA and the government before attending school.

    • 6

Go to the US Department of Education website. Click on discretionary grant opportunities. Read through the various opportunities and apply online for any that you feel you qualify for.

    • 7

Return to the US Department of Education site. Click on Grants.gov, and read through the information found on that page. If you feel that you qualify for any grants listed on the following page, click on the grant name and fill out the online application that is associated with that grant.
