The American Academy of Physical Therapy scholarship is open to physical therapy and physical therapy assistant students enrolled in an accredited physical therapy program. Programs must be accredited by the American Academy of Physical Therapy or must be a candidate for accreditation. The maximum scholarship amount for physical therapy assistant students is $500. Students must show an interest in making the lives of others easier by participating in internships, clinics or community projects in which their skills in physical therapy are needed. Excellent scholastic achievement is also considered.
The American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF) scholarship program is open to full-time students of occupational therapy or occupational therapy assistants programs. To become eligible, students must possess outstanding academic achievement, become a member of the AOTF, submit two references and a program director's statement. Scholarship amounts range in value from $150 to $5,000. More than 50 scholarships are available, so students can apply for multiple scholarships. Only one scholarship per student will be awarded, however.
The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professionals (ASHAP) scholarship program is open to all students planning a career in the health field who are enrolled in schools that belong to the association. Visit the ASHAP website for a complete list of college and university members. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to the student who best demonstrates his academic abilities and excellence in his chosen field. To qualify, you must have completed at least one semester of coursework and submit an application form, resume, nomination letter endorsed by the ASAHP institutional representative and a short statement explaining the reason for choosing to study and eventually work in the health care field.
Contact the financial aid office at your college or university to learn more about scholarship opportunities. In addition to scholarships offered specifically for occupational therapy and rehabilitation science departments, general academic and merit scholarships are offered to most students who meet eligibility requirements. Maintaining a high GPA (grade point average) and becoming involved in community and college organizations are ways to qualify for these scholarships. Contact local and national non-profit groups such as the Special Olympics to learn more about scholarships and grants available to those who want to work in rehabilitation and physical therapy fields.
