The Japan Foundation funds cultural exchange between Japan and other nations through nine grants in three fields of the arts. The fields for the grants are figurative arts, performing arts and audio-visual arts. Two visual arts grants support exhibitions and projects in countries other than Japan. Performing arts grants are awarded for performances overseas, in America and in Europe. Audio-Visual and publication grants provide funding for translation programs, film or visual media productions on Japan and overseas film or media events held by Japanese citizens or youth. Not all awards require recipients to be Japanese citizens.

Through various partnerships with domestic and foreign agencies, the United States' National Endowment for the Arts provides funding for international cultural exchange through programs and grants. The Open World Cultural Leaders Program provides financial and migratory support for Russian artists looking for short-term residencies at American institutions. The U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program, operated in partnership with the Japan-United States Friendship Commission, aids American artists in any discipline in arranging five-month residencies in Japan. A handful of other programs exist for other purposes.
