Foreign Exchange Programs for Americans

Participating in a foreign exchange program, often known as study abroad, has become a rite of passage for many young Americans. In these programs, students attend classes in another country, learning a foreign language and culture while they continue their education. Many high schools, colleges and universities operate programs, but there are also a number of independent organizations that offer foreign exchange programs for interested students.
  1. AYUSA Global Youth Exchange

    • Founded in 1980, AYUSA specializes in sending American and Canadian high school students abroad and bringing students from elsewhere to North America. Programs are offered in 12 countries spanning South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Students are abroad for a semester or an entire academic year, during which they live with a host family and attend a local high school. AYUSA also offers summer cultural exchange programs and scholarships to help defray the cost of the program. AYUSA is an acronym for "Academic Year in the U.S.A."
