Programs for Nursing in Florida

Nursing students in Florida have the choice of a wide variety of schools, including Hispanic-serving and historically black colleges and universities. While program options differ, even some of the smaller schools offer more than one path to the bachelor of Science (BSN) degree. Interested students should consult each university’s website for specific admissions criteria and program details.
  1. University of Florida

    • The University of Florida offers a traditional BSN program, as well as a four-semester accelerated BSN program for students with bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines who wish to earn a BSN. For students interested in graduate degrees in nursing, the university has a BSN-to-Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, requiring two-and-a-half years of full-time study after completion of the BSN. It also offers an accelerated BSN-to-Ph.D. program, requiring four years of full-time study after BSN completion; an MSN is awarded after the fourth semester of study. Total enrollment, as of fall 2009, was more than 46,000. Total annual cost of attendance for on-campus students was $16,723 for in-state students and $36,094 for out-of-state students, according to the College Board.

    Florida State University

    • Like the University of Florida, Florida State University also offers both a traditional BSN and accelerated BSN program. Students may also pursue a Masters of Science in Nursing or DNP at Florida State. Instruction for these programs generally occurs online. Fall 2009 enrollment at Florida State University approached 40,000, according to the College Board. Total annual costs for on-campus, in-state students was $17,758, and $32,203 for out-of-state students, according to the College Board.

    Florida Southern College

    • Florida Southern College is a Hispanic-serving institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. In addition to a traditional BSN program, Florida Southern College features an RN-to-BSN program for registered nurses with associate’s degrees. Students also have the option of four graduate programs in nursing, including a post-master’s certificate program. The College Board reported a fall 2009 enrollment of just over 2,000, and a fall 2010 annual cost of $35,172.

    Florida Agricultural

    • Students at the historically black Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University may enroll in either a traditional BSN program or an RN-to-BSN program. Graduate students in nursing may pursue an MSN, a post-master’s certificate or a Ph.D. offered in cooperation with the University of Florida, which acts as the awarding institution and Florida State University. Just over 12,250 students enrolled at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in fall 2009, according to the College Board. The cost for on-campus, in-state students in fall 2009 was $15,056, and $26,449 for out-of-state students.
