LPN to RN Transition Schools

Many nurses enter the profession with an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse -- depending on your state) credential and decide later to "upgrade" to the RN (Registered Nurse) license in order to be eligible for higher pay and increased career opportunities. An RN degree might be offered as part of an associate's degree program or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. For LPNs, who already have a great deal of medical knowledge and professional experience, many RN programs offer an "accelerated" or "transition" track toward the RN degree. Most state nurses' associations list local LPN-to-RN programs on their websites.
  1. Ivy Tech Community College

    • Ivy Tech offers an accelerated LPN-to-RN Associate Degree program at 14 campuses across the state of Indiana. The transition program requires 29 courses, varying from one to five credits each (that is, not all the courses require the same time commitment).

    Global Health Nurse Training Services

    • Located in Alexandria, Virginia, GHNTS offers a full-time program for "transitional" LPN students to attain an Associate Degree in Nursing and be eligible for RN licensing exams. Like most other LPN-to-RN programs, it requires courses in both general education (such as communications and psychology) and in nursing (pharmacology, clinical work, etc.). For LPNs, the program takes 18 months (as opposed to 24 months for new nursing students).
