Naval ROTC Schools

From the sunny skies of Vallejo, California to New York, there are great Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) schools across the nation. The four that stand out in most navy personnel's minds are California Maritime Academy, Virginia Military Institute, The Citadel and the State University of New York Maritime College.
  1. California Maritime Academy

    • Nestled in Vallejo, California, the California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a uniquely specialized portion of the California State University system. Cal Maritime offers bachelor's degrees in such courses as facilities engineering technology, global studies and maritime affairs. According to its website, "Cal Maritime is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States—and the only one on the West Coast.” Cal Maritime prepares its students for careers in maritime policy, technology and international business through classroom experience and a two-month cruise training experience.

    Virginia Military Institute

    • The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was founded in 1839 in Lexington, Virginia as a four-year undergraduate college. VMI imbues its students with structure and responsibility fitting of an officer of the Navy. Students are punctual, disciplined and courteous. The cadets of VMI live a military lifestyle, wearing their cadet uniforms, living in barracks and eating their meals in a mess hall. The result of this structured living combined with its top-notch education is what has kept VMI at the top of NROTC programs since its founding.

    The Citadel Navy Battalion

    • The Citadel Navy Battalion, known simply as the Citadel, is found in Charleston, South Carolina. The Citadel's over-arching purpose is to prepare officer candidates and midshipmen for leadership roles. The Citadel performs this through rigorous training and the immersion of its cadets in leadership training exercises, Battalion level exercises and classroom education. The Citadel's prized program is its seaman to admiral-21 (STA-21) program that trains cadets of all ranks and ages for continual advancement through the ranks of the navy.

    State University of New York Maritime College

    • The State University of New York Maritime College (SUNY Maritime) is a graduate and undergraduate program that focuses on maritime transportation, engineering, business and science. SUNY was founded in 1874 and has since created leaders in various fields of business and science, including an astronaut. SUNY Maritime offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as five different ROTC options, U.S. Coast Guard licensing and 20 varsity athletic programs. To fulfill true maritime experience, the school owns and operates a 565-foot training ship, the Empire State VI, which travels the world every summer.
