Required Training for a Powered Industrial Truck

Powered industrial trucks, or forklifts, are involved in tens of thousands of injuries every year, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Unsafe operating procedures and inadequate training cause most injuries. To improve safety, OSHA requires employers to offer safety training to anyone operating a PIT on the job.
  1. Training

    • Drivers must receive information on how to operate a PIT, how truck controls work and where they're located, vehicle stability and how to steer and maneuver. In addition, they must know about the capacity of the vehicles they drive, visibility restrictions and any hazards their PIT could present. Information about required maintenance should also be given, along with information about how to refuel or charge the batteries.

    Instructors

    • OSHA requires training to be provided by someone with the "necessary knowledge, training and experience to train powered industrial truck operators." This can be someone with a degree or certificate, or an experienced and knowledgeable driver. Employers can hire a private company to provide training services, or ask truck manufacturers, or local safety and health organizations to help.

    Refresher

    • Employers must review each operator's skill set and knowledge every three years to determine if they need additional training. Operators should receive refresher training more often if they demonstrate a problem operating the PIT safely or if something in the workplace changes in a way to impact safe operation of the PIT.
