Grants for Deaconess Training

Since the 19th century, the deaconess movement in Anglican and Protestant churches has provided opportunities for women to become full-time church workers serving in ministries around the world. Deaconess training can be the first step toward seminary study, ordination or an advanced degree. Some churches and church organizations offer grants, scholarships and other assistance to women choosing to become deaconesses.
  1. The Anglican Deaconess Institution, Sydney Limited

    • Since 1891, the Anglican Deaconess Institution, Sydney Limited has been providing spiritual services and meeting human needs around the world. With an emphasis on training women to work as deaconesses in disadvantaged areas worldwide, the Anglican Deaconess Institution offers scholarships for training and some assistance with travel.     Lutheran Women's Missionary League

    • Lutheran churches encourage deaconess service in all areas of the world. The Lutheran Women's Missionary League offers $6,000 toward training and resources for deaconesses working in ministries in Latin America. Information is available from the League's website: www.lwmlcid.org.

    LCMS Deaconess Programs

    • Other Lutheran ministries also offer deaconess training for women serving in ministries locally and abroad. The Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod Deaconess Programs offer funding for women to serve as Deaconesses or to seek ordination.     Episcopal Diocese Deaconess House Scholarship Fund

    • The Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania Church Training and Deaconess House Scholarship Fund provides support for women seeking ordination or for a degree to further a lay ministry. Although the diocese gives preference to residents of Pennsylvania, grants of $2,000 to $3,000 are available for one year on the basis of academic excellence.
