A four-year baccalaureate degree program in industrial design provides students with an introduction to the concepts of two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, drawing and design materials. Students learn how create products from scratch using theories of art, business and design, and are often required to complete a final studio project.
Graduate degree programs in industrial design are designed to help students build upon their design skills and competencies. Students often gain hands-on assistance from faculty advisers and build relationships with businesses in the design industry, while at the same time creating their own industrial design projects.
Many bachelor's and master's degree programs in industrial design either require or recommend that students fulfill internships with design and manufacturing firms. Students learn first-hand how to research a product, fulfill a client's demand, work with a product development team and use computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
