Snead State Community College provides an LPN to RN mobility program that allows currently licensed practical nurses to acquire an associate in applied science degree. Applicants must have completed coursework in anatomy and physiology, math, and English composition with a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher. Students can choose to complete this program on-campus or through online distance education. All theoretical instruction is delivered through a web-based platform. Supervised clinical training must be completed at a board-approved facility in Alabama. This option consists of three semesters of student in microbiology, psychology, nursing through the lifespan, human growth and development, communications, humanities, and nursing role transition.

Calhoun Community College provides a "career mobility" program that allows LPNs to earn an associate of applied science degree in four semesters. An online distance learning option has recently been approved for working professionals. All coursework is delivered in a web-based format with the exception of one "career mobility assessment" course that requires on-campus skills validation. Applicants require completed courses in human anatomy and physiology, English composition, and intermediate algebra. This program combines general education requirements in the liberal arts and sciences with specialized instruction in nursing theory and practice.

Graduates of these programs are well prepared to acquire licensure from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Applicants must pass the NCLEX-RN examination before receiving the designation of registered nurse (RN) that permits them to seek employment in both Alabama and throughout the United States. According to the "Occupational Outlook Handbook" issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor, the demand for RNs is projected to increase by at least 22 percent through until 2018. As of 2010 the average annual of a RN is $62,450, whereas the typical income of a LPN is $39,030.
