Online Schools for a Winemaking Vineyard

Winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the first vine is set in the soil. Winemaking, or enology, is a marriage of science and art, as is viticulture, the science of grape growing. As the wine culture continually evolves, so do educational opportunities in viticulture and enology through distance learning and online schools.
  1. University of California at Davis

    • UC Davis offers an online certificate program in winemaking through the UC Davis Extension program. The program focuses on the science of winemaking as it applies to a winery. Courses include an introduction to winemaking, establishing a small vineyard, quality control and analysis, sensory analysis, and viticulture for winemakers. Participants earn a winemaking certificate from this world-renowned program upon the successful completion of five quarter-long courses. The course consists of online learning and videos. The mid-term and final examinations must be proctored.

    Washington State University Extension

    • The WSU Extension offers both a Viticulture Certificate program and an Enology Certificate program. The viticulture program consists of 11 online courses and three hands-on weekends in Prosser, Washington. In the online courses participants study the anatomy and physiology of the grapevine and several aspects of viticulture. During the hands-on weekends students will gain valuable experience and knowledge in pruning, diagnosing, and detecting disease in the grapevine and yield prediction. The enology program consists of nine online courses and three hands-on weekends and winery tours. Skills and techniques in wine chemistry, microbiology, processing, filtration, and sensory are included in this program.
