Walden University, founded in 1970, offers a Ph.D. in human services which includes, but is not limited to, emphases in counseling, criminal justice, and clinical social work. Students may study either through an interactive program, which is more inclusive in nature, or they may study on their own. Both options allow for input from the university's professors. The interactive program requires between 98 and 102 credit hours, while the independent study option is 109 credit hours. Students pursuing the doctorate may also create their own program, which requires faculty approval prior to its commencement and 102 credit hours for completion.
