Top Public Medical Schools

Each year, U.S. News & World Report ranks the tops medical schools in the United States. There are several public schools that are considered among the top medical schools in the country, including East Tennessee State University's Quillen College, Florida State University's College of Medicine and University of Washington's School of Medicine.
  1. East Tennessee State University

    • Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University teaches future doctors to practice in rural communities. The medical college is the primary health provider in eastern Tennessee. Degrees offered at Quillen College include Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science. Applicants must have completed the MCATs no more than two years before applying. The 2009/2010 tuition was $22,880 for in-state students and $23,758 for out-of-state students.

    Florida State University

    • Florida State University's College of Medicine weaves "community-based clinical education" into its curriculum. First- and second-year medical students complete clinical education requirements in area physicians' practices and at the school's Clinical Learning Center. Third- and fourth-year students complete clinical rotations at one of the school's regional campuses in Pensacola, Tallahassee, Orlando, Daytona Beach, Sarasota or Fort Pierce. In 2009, the average GPA for incoming students was 3.7; the average MCAT score for incoming students was 28. The school accepts in-state and out-of-state applications but gives preference to residents. The 2009/2010 tuition for in-state students was $18,230. Tuition for out-of-state students was $52,781.

    University of Washington

    • University of Washington's School of Medicine was ranked as the number 1 primary care medical school in U.S. News & World Report's Best Medical Schools for 2010. Applicants with a GPA of 3.5 and an average score of 9 on the MCAT are considered, although the school has not established minimum scores. Estimated tuition for the 2010/2011 academic year is approximately $22,018 for in-state students and $52,510 for out-of-state students.
