Philippine Medical Schools

The completion of a Doctor of Medicine degree, a program which lasts a minimum of four years, makes a student eligible to take the licensure exam for medical doctors in the Philippines. There are a number of colleges and universities in the Philippines offering medical degrees as well as graduate and post-graduate programs.
  1. Manila Central University

    • This university, established by the late attorney Filemon D. Tanchoco and his wife, Purificacion Gallego-Tanchoco, aims to be the leader in health science and professional programs utilizing technology-based instruction in the country. Its College of Medicine, established in 1947, is dedicated to producing graduates who are morally upright and competent physicians. The college's graduates have held key positions in the medical community as well as in the government of the Philippines. The college has several key departments---including surgery, neuro-psychiatry, micro-parasitology and pathology---as well as standing committees to ensure the college's objectives and plans are carried out in three areas: faculty and student development, academics and public relations. The university's basic medical degree course lasts four years, including practical training. Students who wish to be admitted must take an entrance examination.

    University of the Philippines-Manila

    • The nation's state university opened its medical school in 1907 with the objective of leading and excelling in medical education, research and service focused on the community---especially the underserved. The school, which has 21 departments under its college of medicine, offers two entry points: Learning Unit I, which is the pre-medical course and admits approximately 40 applicants annually; and Learning Unit III, which is medicine proper, lasting five years. The university requires applicants to the medicine proper program to have a valid National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) score not lower than the 90th percentile. Aside from the two programs, the state university has a post-graduate Institute of Medicine that focuses on continuing education and competency development among medical practitioners to ensure quality medical and health care service.
