Top Colleges of Psychiatrists

The top psychiatry programs in the United States are located in universities with nationally recognized medical programs. One way to determine the top psychiatric medical programs is based on research funding received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is generally an indication of the school's leadership in research and in the pioneering of new methods of psychiatric treatment.
  1. University of Pittsburgh

    • At the top of the list of psychiatric departments receiving the most funding in 2005 from the NIH is the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt). Pitt's 2005 funding total was over $76 million. The psychiatry department at Pitt is divided into three primary areas of concern: clinical care, education and research. Pitt is home to the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic which offers clinical care to patients and offers students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Research at Pitt revolves around five primary areas: childhood and adolescence, schizophrenia, affective and related disorders, geriatrics, and health and disease. Pitt's psychiatric education department offers residencies and clinical training in a number of different specializations such as child psychiatry, geriatrics and forensics. Multiple post-doctoral research training programs are available as well.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • Second in NIH funding for psychiatry in 2005 was the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Penn's medical school is one of the top-rated medical schools in the world on an annual basis and its psychiatry program only contributes to that ongoing reputation. NIH funding totaled over $52 million in 2005. Like the Pitt program, Penn is divided into three primary areas of concern: patient care, education and research. Penn's Center for Neurobiology and Behavior is foremost among its basic science research facilities, while clinical research is conducted through a number of different institutes and centers. Three basic strategies comprise the Penn approach to psychiatric research: translational research (applying basic science research in a clinical setting), interventions and health services research. Education programs offered through the department include medical training, psychiatric residencies, post-doctoral training, clinical psychology and continuing education accreditation.

    Yale University

    • Yale University's Department of Psychiatry is the third highest funded program in the United States. Yale's 2005 funding by the NIH totaled over $50 million. Like both Pitt and Penn, Yale's department is divided up among clinical care, education and research divisions. Patient care is administered through three primary facilities: the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, Connecticut Mental Health Center and the VA Connecticut Healthcare Systems. Research at Yale revolves around the topics of women's behavioral health, molecular neurobiology, prevention, genetics, brain imaging, health services, psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. Yale offers a full array of medical and psychology training programs including multiple residency options.
