One of 26 osteopathy schools in the nation, the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) offers a four-year medical curriculum leading to a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree. A doctor of osteopathic medicine---or DO--- is similar to the more traditional medical doctor (MD) in every aspect except for their philosophy of treatment. A DO is trained to consider a more holistic approach to health rather than just treating a symptom. COM's curriculum focuses on basic sciences and clinical skills during the first two years. During the final two years, students are expected to gain hands-on experience through clinical rotations in medical centers, hospitals or private doctors throughout the state.

The School of Community Medicine specializes in training students to employ traditional doctoring skills such as diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illnesses to benefit whole communities rather than individual patients. Students are free to pick their preferred area of concentration such as family medicine, neurology or pediatrics but clinical rotations focus on public health, community service and underprivileged sectors of society. In addition to its doctor of medicine degree, the school also offers a physician's assistant degree.
