Dental Schools in England

England's dental schools offer programs that open career opportunities ranging from dental assistant to specialized dental practices such as orthodontics. The National Health Service (NHS) reported in April 2010 that its salaried dentists made salaries ranging from 37,714 to 80,674 pounds a year. Most English dental schools require applicants to have achieved three A level grades or equivalent marks, and nine schools take performance on the UK Clinical Aptitude Test into account when making admission decisions.
  1. King's College London Dental Institute

    • King's College's Dental Institute is Britain's largest dental school and received a perfect rating of 24/24 in the UK's Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education's 2000 review. The undergraduate program focuses on basic medical and biological science in its first two years, shifting the emphasis to oral health and clinical knowledge as students progress through the program. The undergraduate program emphasizes total patient care, teaching students to consider their patients' overall oral health and well-being instead of narrowly focusing on the specific issue the patient is being seen for. Graduate students have the opportunity to conduct research into clinical science and topics in oral medicine, as well as to study specialized oral health topics in a more traditional academic environment.

Newcastle University School of Dental Sciences

    • The school's undergraduate program focuses on biological sciences for the first two years, introducing clinic and oral medicine coursework toward the end of the second year. Undergraduates begin treating patients early in the program's third year and learn to focus on preventative measures as much as treatment of oral health problems. Postgraduates can choose from structured academic programs in specializations including conscious sedation and restorative dentistry and can pursue research into clincal and theoretical areas of dentistry, from topics ranging from oral disease pathology and nutrition's role in oral health. The UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), a joint study undertaken by Britain's education funding councils which assesses the quality of research in the UK's colleges and universities, rated 95% of the school's research as "internationally significant" in their 2008 assessment and seven of the school's staff members are winners of the Distinguished Scientist Award from The International Association for Dental Research.

University of Manchester School of Dentistry

    • The School of Dentistry's five year undergraduate program puts students into clincal courses along with their basic science and oral health coursework in their first year. Students hone their clinical skills in dental practices and community clinics, and the program emphasizes teamwork and communication skills along with the clinical and theoretical aspects of dentistry. The school also offers a three year oral health science program for students pursuing careers as dental hygienists or therapists. The school's postgraduate offerings include structured academic programs focusing on areas including endodontics and oral surgery, and postgraduates have the opportunity to pursue research into topics including craniofacial genetics and clinical subjects such as oral imaging. The UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated the school's research quality the finest in the nation.
