New England Dental Schools

New England has been known for its outstanding colleges and universities since the founding of this country. Compared to other disciplines, dental schools are a relative few. In New England, while being close geographically, the dental schools take different approaches toward dentistry education. The one thing they all have in common is that they are among the most respected and most selective graduate schools in the country.
  1. Tufts University School of Dental Medicine

    • Tufts University School of Dental Medicine was founded in 1868. Admission to the dental school is widely sought by future dentists; more than 4,000 applications are submitted per year. The university is quite selective; of the 4,000 applicants, only 150 students are enrolled.

Tufts offers two combined degrees. The B.S./D.MD. option is a program for Tufts undergraduate students, which enables them to finish their bachelor's degree and D.MD. in seven years. The eight-year early assurance program allows students to complete a bachelor's degree and D.MD. degree in eight years.

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine has several student organizations such as the American Association of Women Dentists, Gay and Lesbian Student Organization, and the Christian Medical Dentist's Society.

    Harvard School of Dental Medicine

    • In 1867, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine was founded. At the time, it was known as Harvard Dental School. It was the first university-based dental school in the United States. In 1940, the name changed to the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and has since remained the most selective in America. Of the 1,000 applicants each year, only 35 students will be accepted.

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine takes the approach of having medical students and dental students study the same curriculum, in the same settings, for two years.
