Schools for Design in Detroit, Michigan

Detroit, Michigan, is home to a few design schools--schools dedicated to teaching the arts of graphic, interior, and architectural design and many other facets of the creative arts. Many professional designers, whether working in the field of graphic design or home décor, get their start by attending a school for the arts or a design school.
  1. College for Creative Studies (CCS)

    • Located in Detroit's cultural area, the College for Creative Studies (CCS) is an art school that offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in 11 majors and Master of Fine Arts degrees in 2 majors. Design-oriented degrees include advertising design, graphic design, interior design, product design and transportation design. The classes at CCS are designed to be small, as the school has an 11-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Student artwork and designs are regularly featured on campus, in local art galleries and on the school's website.

International Academy of Design & Technology (IADT): Detroit

    • The International Academy of Design & Technology was originally founded in Chicago during the 1970s and has since opened sister schools all over the United States, including locations in Seattle, San Antonio and Detroit. The Detroit campus, which is one of the largest design schools in the area, offers an Associate of Fine Arts degree in fashion design and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in fashion design and merchandising, interior design and graphic design. The system of IADT schools networks with professional art galleries, graphic design companies and creative design firms, all of which posts available jobs on the school's website. Job placement assistance is available.

    The Art Institute of Michigan

The campus is located in Novi, Michigan, which is approximately 25 miles outside of Detroit. The school trains students in many fields of art, including culinary arts, media arts, fashion design, interior design and graphic design. The Art Institute of Michigan promotes exploration in both creativity and travel and offers its students the chance to study art all around the world in a study-abroad program.

    Lawrence Tech

    • Located in Southfield, a suburb of Detroit, Lawrence Tech offers undergraduate programs in art and design. The Department of Art and Design offers degrees in interior architecture, digital arts, and digital design and transportation design. The school also offers a graduate program dedicated to interior design and urban design. Urban design is a program designed to teach students how to integrate architectural designs into existing cities by understanding the region, history and culture of the area. Although the school is not as large as IADT, the curriculum at Lawrence Tech is designed to offer its students a larger-than-life experience.
