Technical Theatre Schools

Technical theatre is a field of study that includes all the "behind the scenes" components involved in putting on a stage production. There are hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States that offer technical theatre majors and degrees. The five largest programs in the country are the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, California Institute of the Arts, University of Cincinnati, State University of New York at Purchase College, and City University of New York, New York City College of Technology.
  1. University of North Carolina School of the Arts

    • The School of Design and Production within the bigger School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, offers comprehensive instruction in 12 different elements of technical theatre. It works in cooperation with the Schools of Dance, Drama, Filmmaking and Music. Students manage the production of more than 20 of the college's shows each year. You can receive a Bachelor of Arts or Fine Arts or a Master of Fine Arts degree upon completion of the respective programs.

    California Institute of the Arts

    • Located in Valencia, California, this school offers several programs in design and production within its School of Theatre, including scene design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, technical direction and management. You can pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Master of Fine Arts with any of these emphases.

    University of Cincinnati

    • The Theatre Design and Production Program within the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music features high-quality facilities and technology. Students can earn Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees with emphases in costume design and technology, lighting design and technology, makeup and wig design, scenic design, sound design, stage management and technical production.

    State University of New York at Purchase College

    • Purchase College offers a Bachelor and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Design/Stage Technology. According to the program's website, more than 86 percent of its graduates are working in their chosen profession, many of whom have received Tony, Emmy, Obie and Drama Desk awards. As a student you can choose one of six concentrations: scenic design, costume design, lighting design, costume technology, stage management and technical direction/production management.

    City University of New York, New York City College of Technology

    • The Entertainment Technology Department at the New York City College of Technology offers its students a four-year baccalaureate degree to train them for careers in the entertainment industry. It is a comprehensive program with an emphasis on industry technology offering courses in sound, show control, lighting, scenery, music technology, interactive systems, video systems and fabrication.
