Joliet Junior College, founded in 1901, was the first community college in the United States, according to the AACC. The school offers a two-year pre-baccalaureate program intended for students who wish to continue their studies by transferring to a four-year college, as well as vocational education for career development. Fields of study at Joliet Junior College include agricultural sciences, business, computers, health information, hospitality and nursing. The College of Lake County is located in the far northeastern Chicago suburb of Grayslake, Illinois. The college offers a college credit program for transfer to a four-year college, vocational programs, GED preparation and company-specific training for businesses. Areas of college credit study include health sciences, business, fine arts and engineering. According to its website, the College of DuPage is the “third-largest single-campus community college in the nation,” and the largest community college in the state. The college, located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, serves more than 30,000 students each semester, offering pre-baccalaureate, vocational degree and certificate programs. This publicly funded school offers lowered tuition for local residents, and provides classes at more than 90 off-campus sites, including high schools, churches and community centers throughout northeastern Illinois.
