Community Colleges in the Northern Illinois Area

According to the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), there are 1,173 community colleges in the United States. These colleges serve mostly adults, with an average student age of 29 as of 2009. A significant percentage of students are minorities (36 percent), and many are the first in their families to attend college (39 percent). Northern Illinois has a rich history of community college education and is the home of the nation’s first community college.
  1. Joliet Junior College

    • Joliet Junior College, founded in 1901, was the first community college in the United States, according to the AACC. The school offers a two-year pre-baccalaureate program intended for students who wish to continue their studies by transferring to a four-year college, as well as vocational education for career development. Fields of study at Joliet Junior College include agricultural sciences, business, computers, health information, hospitality and nursing. The college offers associate degrees for general education or vocational studies, as well as certificate programs.

    College of Lake County

    • The College of Lake County is located in the far northeastern Chicago suburb of Grayslake, Illinois. The college offers a college credit program for transfer to a four-year college, vocational programs, GED preparation and company-specific training for businesses. Areas of college credit study include health sciences, business, fine arts and engineering. Vocational training prepares students for careers in criminal justice, auto repair, massage therapy and numerous other specialties. College of Lake County has also partnered with 18 other colleges and universities to offer programs on their behalf at its University Center.

    College of DuPage

    • According to its website, the College of DuPage is the “third-largest single-campus community college in the nation,” and the largest community college in the state. The college, located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, serves more than 30,000 students each semester, offering pre-baccalaureate, vocational degree and certificate programs. This publicly funded school offers lowered tuition for local residents, and provides classes at more than 90 off-campus sites, including high schools, churches and community centers throughout northeastern Illinois. Areas of study include psychology, music, accounting, computer information systems, theater, religious studies and numerous others. Students can enroll and pay for classes online.
