Community Colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area

Community colleges, also commonly referred to as junior colleges, are typically two-year programs offering associate's degrees in a variety of subjects that allow students to directly enter a field upon graduation or transfer their credits and continue toward a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university. The San Francisco Bay Area is home to a number of community colleges.
  1. City College of San Francisco

    • The City College of San Francisco is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The college enrolls approximately 100,000 students in both its associate's degree and non-credit educational programs each year. It consists of 10 campuses, spread throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and schools dedicated to applied science and technology, behavioral and social sciences, business, health and physical education, international education and English as a Second Language, liberal arts and science and mathematics. It also offers distance learning programs, as well as educational programs for working adults. The City College of San Francisco has been in existence since 1935.

    Santa Rosa Junior College

    • Santa Rosa Junior College enrolls approximately 40,000 students each semester. It was founded in 1918, making it California's 10th oldest community college. The Santa Rosa Junior College was designed to prepare students for entry into the University of California system upon graduation, and is modeled after the nearby University of California at Berkeley. It offers one of the largest scholarship programs of any community college in the United States, and is home to a renowned center for culinary arts.

    Empire College

    • Empire College is situated in the wine-growing region of Sonoma County. It offers courses in business administration, accounting, Information Technology, tourism and hospitality management, office administration, paralegal and medical assistance, among other areas. It is also home to a Juris Doctor program, for those who intend to embark upon law careers; approximately 80 percent of all Empire College law students who have taken the bar exam have passed. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools accredits Empire College. In 2007, Empire College was a recipient of the Career College Association's Community Service Award.
