Junior Colleges in the SF Bay Area

The San Francisco Bay area encompasses nine counties surrounding the bay in Northern California, with the city of San Francisco at its heart and Oakland and San Jose within its boundaries. With a population of nearly 7.4 million people, the area hosts numerous junior and community colleges to meet its residents' educational needs. Several of the largest accredited junior colleges by student population include the City College of San Francisco, De Anza College, Foothill College, Laney College, Ohlone College and the College of San Mateo.
  1. City College of San Francisco

    • The City College of San Francisco (CCSF) is a two-year junior college with 11 campuses located in the city of San Francisco. Accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the college offers associate degrees, professional certificates and transfer programs in more than 100 disciplines. Students can pursue degrees in areas ranging from administration of justice to library information technology. CCSF's campus features 70 computer labs, a language center and a media center.

    De Anza College

    • De Anza College is an ACCJC-accredited, two-year junior college located in Cupertino, on the sound end of the bay. De Anza offers associate degrees, certificates of completion and transfer programs. Associate degrees are offered in 60 different career or technical areas, including a top-rated animation program. Students can make use of the school's open media lab, technology center and computer systems lab.

    Foothill College

    • Located in Los Altos Hills, on the southwest side of the bay, Foothill College offers students certificate programs, two-year associate degree and transfer programs in 80 academic areas, including child development, dental assisting, paramedics and viticulture. The college is accredited by the ACCJC. The campus hosts a multimedia arts computer lab, language lab and media center.

    Laney College

    • Laney College, located in Oakland, is part of the Peralta Community College District. The ACCJC-accredited junior college offers more than 40 associate degree programs, transfer and career certificate programs. Students can choose from programs such as architecture and engineering, culinary arts, physics or wood technology. Student support services include a technology center and computer labs, and the campus houses a performance theater and an art center.

    Ohlone College

    • The ACCJC-accredited Ohlone College offers more than 180 degrees and academic programs. Popular degree programs include business, registered nursing and respiratory therapy. Ohlone's two campuses are located on the east side of the bay in Fremont and Newark. The Fremont campus houses a business and technology center, a biotechnology laboratory and greenhouse and a performing arts center.

    • The College of San Mateo (CSM) is located on the west side of the bay in the city of San Mateo. The college is ACCJC-accredited. Campus highlights include a multimedia lab, writing center, integrated science center and an anatomy lab. CSM offers associate degrees, certificate and transfer programs in more than 40 disciplines, including computer and information science, cosmetology, engineering technology, nursing and real estate.
