  1. University of Cambridge

    • U.S. News and World Report rated colleges in England as four of the top six schools in the world. At the top of the list of English colleges and universities is the University of Cambridge. Cambridge ranked second worldwide just behind Harvard University for the 2009 rankings and is recognized as one of the world's premier research universities.

      The university houses 31 separate colleges and several of its programs such as engineering and the sciences usually rank in the top-five worldwide. Cambridge's medical school is also a top-rated medical college ranking second, once again, only to Harvard among all medical schools in the world.

    University College-London

    • University College of London (UCL) is considered a top-rated institution in its medical program, law school, the social sciences and engineering. U.S. News and World Report rated UCL as the fourth best institution worldwide. Other publications like the Times Educational Supplement rated UCL much lower, but still within the top 25 worldwide.

    Imperial College London

    • Imperial College of London is another top-ranking university among the world's best institutions. Imperial College was ranked 17th by the Times Higher Education Supplement and fifth by U.S. News and World Report. Imperial College is rated as having a top-25 program in the field of life sciences. In the fields of information technology, engineering and the natural sciences. Imperial College's programs are also considered a top-tier programs.

    University of Oxford

    • Although Cambridge may be the highest rated college in the United Kingdom, the University of Oxford is perhaps the most well-known and historically recognizable universities in the world. U.S. News and World Report rated Oxford as the sixth best university in the world just behind Imperial College.

      The Times Supplement placed Oxford higher on its list at number three. Oxford, like Cambridge, is one of the best research institutions in the world and its medical school, likewise, is world renown for its cutting-edge research and reputation among the medical community. Oxford is, however, also known for its scholarship in other important fields of study such as history, philosophy and theology, among others.
