The study of theology involves the study of religious ideas and philosophies throughout history. The Roman Catholic Church has been one of the only continuous threads throughout the history of Christianity. Within the United States are a number of prominent Catholic institutions that continue the Catholic tradition with their schools of theological study.
  1. University of Notre Dame

    • As the flagship university of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., owns the distinction of being the premier institution for the study of Catholic theology. Aside from its school of theology's Catholic roots and emphasis, Notre Dame attracts premier scholars in the study of Christianity, past and present, to its campus to serve as faculty members or for various scholarly conferences. The university offers master's degrees in divinity, theological studies (historical), sacred music and theology. Its doctoral programs are among the best in the world and include concentrations in Christianity and Judaism in antiquity, Christian history, liturgical studies, moral theology and Christian ethics, systematic theology and world religions. Students at Notre Dame benefit from its interdisciplinary approach to theological studies giving students the opportunity to work with renowned Christian historians like George Marsden, who is widely regarded as one of the premier scholars in the history of Christianity.

    Catholic University of America

    • Located in the city of Washington, D.C., the Catholic University of America is considered to be the national university of the Catholic Church. Founded as a graduate school in 1887, the school has expanded its scope to include undergraduate studies and now houses 12 separate schools and 21 research facilities. Areas of study within the school of theology include religion and culture, biblical studies, church history, pastoral studies, historical and systematic theology, moral theology and ethics, liturgical studies and sacred theology. Degrees are offered at both the master's and doctoral levels. Students can also pursue studies in conjunction with other programs within the university such as the department of theology and library science or the history of religions department.

    Boston College

    • Founded as recently as 2008, Boston College's School of Theology and Ministry is the first new professional school to emerge since 1952. The school of theology is part of the Jesuit tradition of the Catholic church. Traditionally, Jesuit schools are known for their academic rigor and excellence. Various degrees are offered at both the master's and doctoral levels. Areas of emphasis include divinity, pastoral ministry, theological studies, religious education, theology, theology and education and sacred theology. Students can also pursue a variety of joint degrees such as the joint M.A. degrees in pastoral ministry and counseling psychology.
