Among the best theological schools in the world, the University of Notre Dame's (ND) Department of Theology is one of the premier schools for theological studies. Despite its Catholic influence, ND's theological studies program is eclectic in nature and incorporates perspectives from a wide variety of sources. Faculty members come from a variety of religious backgrounds, both Catholic and Protestant. For those interested in staying within the Catholic tradition or entering the priesthood, ND offers the basic master of divinity (M.Div.) degree. Other master's degrees are offered in the fields of sacred music, historical theology and theology (contemporary). ND produces some of the premier Ph.D. graduates in various fields of biblical and religious studies. The doctoral programs at ND are interdisciplinary in nature and cover a wide array of subdisciplines within the field: Christian ethics and moral theology, Judaism, Christianity in antiquity, world religions, systematic theology, church history and liturgical studies. Students at ND have the opportunity to work with premier scholars in other departments like George Marsden whose work in the field of American Christianity is considered to be pioneering work in the field.

The divinity school offers the traditional Master of Divinity, the Master of Theology (Th.M.) and the Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.). Its doctoral program confers the Doctor of Theology (Th.D.). Students can also pursue a joint degree and receive the Master of Social Work (M.S.W). Yale University's Divinity School, like Notre Dame and Duke University, is among the best in the world. Yale too offers theological studies through both its divinity school and through the Department of Religious Studies. The divinity program at Yale prepares students for ministerial obligations and offers the M.Div., the Master of Arts in Religion (M.A.R.) and the Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.). Yale began training ministers in 1701 and its curriculum widely reflects its Congregationalist bias. Students wanting to pursue studies in conjunction with the Department of Religious Studies can pursue a Ph.D. in a variety of fields such as theology, religious ethics, American religious history, philosophy of religion, ancient Christianity, Old and New Testament studies, Asian religions, Islamic studies and Judaic studies.
