Milwaukee Area Technical College offers an associate degree program in computer simulation and gaming. Computer simulation is the technique of using a computer program to represent the real world. The degree program gives students the opportunity to plan, create and test games and simulations. Students gain skills in creating three-dimensional animation and models. They are also trained in leading projects and creative teams. Courses include topics such as artificial intelligence, illustrated storytelling, environment and set design, and character expression and lip sync. Students can choose to focus on either the animation or programming side of the field. Graduates of the program are qualified to work as testers, designers, animators, audio producers or programmers.

The Madison Media Institute College of Media Arts in Madison offers an associate degree program in game art and animation. Students learn three-dimensional graphics, animation, virtual world lighting, modeling, texturing and traditional art. Students also work with game development software and engines such as Autodesk Maya and Unreal III by Epic as well as Adobe Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver. The program gives students the opportunity to work in a motion-capture facility and build their portfolios--complete with DVDs, websites and demonstration reels.

Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design offers a bachelor's degree program in time-based media. Classes cover topics such as animation, video, digital technology, experimental film and introduction to sound. Students in the program utilize software such as Final Cut Pro HD, Soundtrack, LightWave and Flash. The school also offers expanded video and computer labs, a sound recording studio, and a presentation theater. Internships are part of the program, and alumni of the college have gone on to work for video game development and design companies such as GC2 and Sony Interactive Studios.
