Art Schools & Colleges in Wisconsin

Wisconsin was once home to the famous artists Georgia O'Keefe, Spencer Tracy and Frank Lloyd Wright. The state takes pride in art and considers it an important resource.

Several colleges and universities there give students the opportunity to receive degrees in art or art history.
  1. Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design

    • Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design is an accredited four-year college that offers bachelor of fine arts degrees in photography, sculpture, communication design, time-based media, interior architecture and design, painting, integrated fine arts, illustration, drawing, printmaking and industrial design.

      As of 2011, approximately 600 full-time students attend the college. The student/faculty ratio is 16:1. All faculty members are working designers, researchers or artists. The campus has two dormitories.

    Art Institute of Wisconsin

    • The Art Institute of Wisconsin, a branch of The Art Institute of Phoenix, is at 320 E. Buffalo St. in Milwaukee. The accredited college offers bachelor of arts degrees in advertising, graphic design, interior design, fashion marketing, digital film making and video production, media arts and animation and web design and interactive media. Students can also pursue an associate degree of applied science in graphic design.

      The student-faculty ratio was 20:1 as of 2011. No on-campus housing is available.

    Carroll University

    • Carroll University is at 100 N. East Ave., Waukesha. The university offers bachelor of science degrees in art and art with an emphasis on commercial art. A bachelor of arts degree in art with an emphasis on fine arts is also available.

      While studying art at Carroll University, students take trips to the Chicago Art Institute and Milwaukee art museums. Students are encouraged to attend art exhibition openings and workshops offered by the art department. Art students are required to have a senior art show and portfolio approved by the art faculty.

    Lawrence University

    • Lawrence University is at 711 E. Boldt Way, Appleton. Art majors at Lawrence University focus on studio art while developing competence in art history. A double major, which permits a student to combine concentrated study in both studio art and art history, is also available. Studio art majors can also receive certification for teaching art in kindergarten through 12th grade.

      The studio art program offers courses in seven separate art disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography and digital processes. Certification for teaching K-12 is available in conjunction with the studio art major.
