Colleges in the Music Business in North Carolina

More and more colleges and universities have established programs and degrees focused on the industry aspect of the music world. Students of music business typically learn the fundamentals of business and how they apply to musicians, record labels, producers and managers. Other main focuses include finances, ethics and law.
  1. North Carolina Central University

    • North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is located in Durham and enrolls 8,587 students, as of February 2011. NCCU has a music industry concentration made to "acquaint students with the concepts and methodologies of the music industry," according to the NCCU website. Students choose between two paths in this area of study. The first combines music performance with financial and business knowledge, while the second path focuses on media and the communications side of the business. Upper-level classes for students in this concentration include music arts management, promotion management and principles of macroeconomics.

    Appalachian State University

    • Appalachian State University is a public-funded school in the mountains of Asheville. Music majors at Appalachian State can focus their attention on music industry studies. Students who complete this course of study will graduate with a bachelor of science. Appalachian State music industry studies students begin their studies with general education requirements, musicianship and performance courses. Then, they must complete 41 to 43 hours of music industry classes. These classes include music products, music recording and production, and music marketing and promotion. Students in this category are also encouraged to earn a business minor, but it is not mandatory.

    Montreat College

    • Montreat College is a private, not-for-profit Christian school founded in 1916 in Montreat that enrolls 1,036 students, as of February 2011. Montreat offers a music business major that provides students with a bachelor of arts upon completion. Montreat is a liberal arts college, so students of the music business focus must take general education classes on top of major-specific requirements. All music business majors take a seminar in the final four semesters that allows them to meet professionals from different aspects of the music business. Majors can also attend the Contemporary Music Center on Martha's Vineyard for one semester as an upperclassman. Music business courses at Montreat include music history and culture, performance and business components.

    Winston-Salem State University

    • Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is a historically black school in Winston-Salem that enrolls 6,442 students, as of February 2011. This university offers a bachelor of science in music business. The music business program at WSSU prepares students for careers in the music industry and similar fields, such as promotions, record sales, music production and marketing. Students in this course of study must prepare a senior recital or an approved project to graduate. Upper-level courses for music business majors include record label marketing, principles of management, voice class and artist management.
