Game Design Colleges in Japan

When the idea of programming your own video game is as exciting as playing one, a career in video game design may be in your future. It's no wonder why a potential game designer would choose to study in Japan rather than elsewhere in the world -- Japan is synonymous with the gaming industry. Nintendo and Sega both originated in Japan, and many games are released there before traveling across the ocean to Western countries. Japanese game design schools do accept international applicants, but you must have a functional knowledge of college-level Japanese to apply.
  1. Nihon Kogakuin College Hachioji

    • Calling itself an "integrated technical school", Nihon Kogakuin College features extensive programs in nearly every field of technology, from animated art and creative design to practical implementation and electrical engineering. Its game design program on the Hachioji campus falls under the Creative Fields department, giving students the option of studying either game programming and level design or CG and art design. Game programming focuses on coding languages and technical implementation, while CG design concentrates more on scenario writing and rendering characters. International applicants must show proof of Japanese comprehension via a passing grade on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or a score of 200 or more on the EJU Test for Japanese, and a guarantee they can pay for tuition and the two-year stay in Japan.

    • The HAL College of Technology and Design specializes in visual technology and 3-D computer graphics. Students can attend a two- or four-year program in game development, production and design, or opt for night classes in the game development department. Many of the books and materials used in class were developed specifically for students of the school. HAL has also acquired several co-operative partnerships with Japan-based game companies like Nintendo, allowing students access to cutting-edge technology. All of HAL's classes are taught in Japanese, and the brochure sent to prospective students is in Japanese.

    Denshi Gakuen Japan Electronics College

    • Denshi Gakuen Japan Electronics College (JEC) was originally founded in 1951 under the name Nippon Advanced Television Technical School, and at the time its primary focus was electrical engineering. While it still teaches those programs today, the school has branched off to include several two- and three-year game programming and design courses. Each course focuses on a specific aspect of gaming, such as programming, CG design and game layout planning. An evening two-year course in game programming is available to people who cannot attend the daytime classes. JEC is affiliated with several Canadian and Korean universities, including Sheridan College and Algonquin College, but its classes are exclusively in Japanese.
