Colleges in Cobb County, Georgia

Located in northwestern Georgia, Cobb County is about 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta. It has the highest percent of people with a bachelor's degree 25 and older in the state, according to a 2003 American Community Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau. Residents looking to stay in-county for college can choose from a handful of schools.
  1. Kennesaw State University

    • Kennesaw State University was founded in 1963 as Kennesaw Junior College with an enrollment of 1,000 students. Today, it's the state's third-largest university with more than 22,500 graduate and undergraduate students. The school has 70 master's, bachelor's and doctorate degree programs. The programs are offered by academic colleges for arts, business, education, health and human services, humanities and social sciences, science and mathematics and a graduate college. The university's nursing program is the largest in the state, according to the school. The Black and Gold have 16 intercollegiate athletic teams that play in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Sun Conference.

    Life University

    • Life University, founded in 1974, has 1 of 15 doctor of chiropractic programs in the country. The program attracts students from every state and has a cutting-edge curriculum and facilities, such as the Center for Health and Optimum Performance. Life University also awards bachelor degrees in exercise science, dietetics, nutrition, biology, biopsychology, business administration, psychology, computer information management, sport health science and life coaching. The university has more than 2,000 students, including almost 1,500 in the College of Chiropractic. The Running Eagles have a varsity men's basketball team that plays in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

    Southern Polytechnic State University

    • Southern Polytechnic State University was founded in 1948 as a two-year school that was part of the Georgia Institute of Technology. It had 116 students who were mostly World War II veterans. The school became a four-year college in 1970 and earned status as an independent school in 1980. Today, SPSU has approximately 4,800 students. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in four schools: arts and sciences; engineering, engineering technology and management; computing and software engineering; and architecture, civil engineering technology and construction. The Hornets have four varsity sports teams that compete in the NAIA.
