Bronx Community College (BCC) was founded in 1957 and has, since then, become an important part of the New York City community college system. BCC offers a variety of fields of study through its seventeen academic departments, which include the departments art and music, biology and medical lab technology, business and information systems, chemistry and chemical technology, communication arts and sciences, education and reading, English, health, physical education and wellness, history, library, mathematics and computer science, modern languages, nursing and allied health, physics and technology, social sciences.

Hostos Community College is also located in the Bronx. The college was originally established for the purpose of providing higher education to previously underserved groups of students. Hostos has ten primary academic departments, which include natural sciences, math, allied health, behavioral and social sciences, library, language and cognition, business, education, humanities and English. Hostos offers associate of arts degrees in just two fields: liberal arts and criminal justice. Associate of science degrees include everything from accounting to mechanical engineering. The college also offers applied science degree in areas such as dental hygiene and nursing.

The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is located in the heart of New York City. BMCC enrolls over 21,000 students on an annual basis. Academically, BMCC offers the widest array of programs of all of the CUNY community colleges.
