NYC Community Colleges

CUNY, the City University of New York, serves almost 250,000 degree credit students and more than that number of continuing and professional education students. The university has conferred over a million degrees since 1967, and 46% of college students in the city of New York attended a CUNY school. In addition to 11 four-year colleges, CUNY is comprised of such schools as the School of Law at Queens College; John Jay College of Criminal Justice; the graduate School of Journalism; and the Davis School of Biomedical Education. There are also six community colleges, including Bronx Community College, La Guardia, Queensborough, Kingsborough, Manhattan and Hostos.
  1. Kingsborough Community College

    • Kingsborough's open access policy accepts every student with a high school diploma or GED. To help students prepare for the future, the college has a range of developmental courses and ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction to help students succeed. Kingsborough's goal is to have students transfer to a four-year college or other post-graduate education. Kingsborough's other programs include its College Now partnership with local high schools, My Turn coursework for senior citizens, the High School for the Sciences located on campus, and Family College, for the children of students on pubic assistance. Kingsborough is accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

    Borough of Manhattan Community College

    • Borough of Manhattan Community College reflects the qualities of its location in downtown Manhattan, with the culture of Tribeca, the energy of Wall Street and the hope of the Statue of Liberty. The student body is made up of local residents as well as those from over 155 countries throughout the world. There are 21,000 degree students with an additional 10,000 continuing education students. Over 60 subjects are offered, leading to a two-year professional-technical degree. The college also prepares students for acceptance to a bachelor degree program.

    Hostos Community College

    • Hostos Community College in the south Bronx has a mission to provide access to higher education for all who wish to participate. The college strives to meet the educational needs of people from communities that traditionally have been excluded from higher education. Hostos offers many programs for the support of students, including a special first-year program for incoming freshmen, mentoring programs, guidance and tutoring. There is a Center for Teaching and Learning that supports both students and teachers.
