Community Colleges in Richmond, VA

Traditionally considered steppingstones on the path to further education, community colleges today offer a wide variety of educational opportunities. Students can pursue an associate degree, complete a certificate, prepare for a bachelor's degree, complete continuing education requirements for their profession or take classes for personal fulfillment. Community colleges offer lower tuition than other state universities; the average cost of Virginia in-state tuition as of 2009 was about $4,760 for four-year and $2,600 for two-year colleges.
  1. J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College

    • The J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College has three campus locations in the Richmond area. Schools include arts, humanities and social sciences; business; engineering and manufacturing technologies; mathematics and science; and nursing and allied health. The school offers a variety of distance learning courses that students can complete online. Financial aid and scholarships are available to qualifying students. Applicants must hold a high school diploma, general equivalency diploma, home school completion certificate or have passed the ability-to-benefit assessment. Tuition for in-state students is about $109 per semester credit hour as of spring 2010.

    John Tyler Community College

    • John Tyler has campuses in Midlothian and Chester, Va., just outside of Richmond city limits. The college offers dual enrollment courses to area high school students, which count as both high school and college credits. These classes are generally held at the student's high school and include traditional academic subject areas as well as some technology and business courses. The college offers international education programs throughout the world. Past programs have included study-abroad trips to the United Kingdom, Peru and Greece. John Tyler also offers a weekend college program for working adults. As of spring 2010, tuition is $100 per credit hour for Virginia students.

    Bryant and Stratton College

    • Bryant and Stratton offers 11 associate degree programs in medical, business and technology fields, as well as bachelor's degrees in general management, information technology, criminal justice, financial services, health services administration and virtual office administration management. The college also has online classes for eligible students as well as career placement, tutoring and mentoring programs. Per-credit hour tuition averages about $436, as of early 2010.
